Have you been the countless doctors searching for the answer? If that sounds like you, you may be suffering from the symptoms of celiac disease.
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that affects the small intestine.
When you eat anything containing gluten - which means anything containing wheat, rye or barley - your body reacts to it.
Your autoimmune system destroys the lining of your small intestine, making it impossible for your body to properly digest food.
The body's inability to draw nutrients from the food you ingest causes a multitude of symptoms - Symptoms: Unfortunately, celiac disease symptoms vary from person to person.
The symptoms can even be different between families! The main symptoms are diarrhea, weight loss and fatigue.
Other symptoms may be present or not, depending on the person.
Celiac disease in children is different as well - older kids tend to have more malabsorption related problems.
If diarrhea is one of the symptoms you get with celiac disease, it will normally be very pale.
Some people also experience abdominal pain or cramping, bloating with abdominal distention and even mouth ulcers.
However, some patients do not experience any gastrointestinal problems at all, or they may even get frequent constipation.
Celiac disease also raises the risk of lymphoma of the small bowel, which is a type of cancer.
As your bowel becomes less able to actually absorb nutrients, you may also experience weight loss, anemia, and a variety of vitamin deficiencies.
Those vitamin deficiencies can cause osteopenia, a weakening of bone density, or even osteoporosis, which is a weakening of the bones themselves.
Symptoms of celiac disease can be mental as well.
People often become depressed or irritable.
They may be tired all the time.
It can even cause tooth discoloration or loss of tooth enamel.
Diagnosis Is Important Because so many people assume they just have a stomach bug, few recognize their symptom correctly..
Sadly, they go through their life plagued by it.
If any of this sounds familiar, it may be time to get tested.
And if it turns out that you test positive, then all it takes is one thing to get rid of it: switching to a special gluten free diet.
It may seem tough at first, but isn't life without all those terrible celiac disease symptoms much worse?
