The major difference over the era of time has been the cars and the commercialisation and the professionalisation of the sport itself. Carmakers submitted their car works in rallies from the start in 1894 in the Paris-Rouen race was primarily a race between them. The Thousand Mile Trial of 1900 had additional entries that were private.
As car rally racing interest grew among the public, car companies began to present variants for car rallies and special models namely the Mini Cooper, British Motor Corporations tremendously successful car along with its succeeding Mini Cooper S (1963) which was industrialized by the Cooper Car Company. Shortly after the Mini Cooper S came on the scene, Ford of Britain hired Lotus to develop a high-performance form of their family car, the Cortina. In 1968 the Escort Twin Cam was launched and fast become one of the best rally cars of that era. Also, Abarth created a high performance 131 saloon and Fiats 124 roadster.
Types of Rallies
There are two chief form of car rally racing. There are the road rallies and the stage rallies. Stage rallies have been a branch of the professional sport since the 1960's. Stage rallies are founded on clear-cut speed over expanses of road that is closed to all other traffic. These road types vary from rough forest tracks, to asphalt mountain passes, from desert sand to snow and ice. No matter what type is chosen, it offers enjoyable challenges for the entire crew and gives a good test of the car's reliability and performance.
The unpredictable and entertaining nature of the platforms, and given the fact that vehicles in some of the cases are closely akin to road cars denotes that the bigger races draw enormous interest of spectators, especially in Oceania, Europe and Asia.
Road rallies are the firsttype of racing, performed on highways open to regular traffic. Emphasis on road rallies is not the speed, but the accuracy of navigation, timekeeping and on vehicle reliability, much of the time over long distances and difficult roads. Primarily, they are amateur events now. There are many forms of road rallies testing navigation, problem solving and accuracy. Common among these rallies are: Monte-Carlo types, various Gimmick types of rallies and Time-Speed-Distance rally.
Rallying is an extremely well liked grass roots motorsport or motor clubs. Individuals who are interested in becoming included in car rally racing are inspired to sign up with the local automotive clubs. Road rallies are mostly operated on public roads with importance being teamwork and navigation.
