The Jedi Code of Conduct

    Jedi Code Mantra

    • The Jedi Code itself consists of a five-line mantra that all Jedi know and have mastered. There are many different versions of this. The original is considered to be:

      Emotion, yet piece.

      Ignorance, yet knowledge.

      Passion, yet serenity.

      Chaos, yet harmony.

      Death, yet the Force.

A more well-known version is similar, yet more widely recognized as "official":

There is no emotion, there is peace.

There is no ignorance, there is knowledge.

There is no passion, there is serenity.

There is no chaos, there is harmony.

There is no death, there is the Force.

    Elaboration

    • The Jedi Code's five lines can easily be elaborated to define the various tenants of Jedi living. The first, focusing on the idea of emotion versus peace, simply means that emotions are a natural and expected part of life. However, such emotions must be controlled and confronted, and ultimately overcome with serenity and peace of mind. The second, acknowledging knowledge over ignorance, means that a Jedi must be open-minded, being both rational and intuitive. The third, speaking of passion and serenity, is similar to the first tenet, which encourages the Jedi to focus on the task at hand rather than the overall goal. Do not act impulsively, but rather wisely and peacefully for a good end result. Fourth, reflecting upon the idea of harmony winning out over chaos, acknowledges that all in the universe is interconnected. Everything that happens is simply a part of life. Finally, the tenet reminding Jedi to not fear death, because the Force will always be with them. This is where they are called to draw their strength.

    Obeying the Code of Conduct

    • Jedi must follow a few rules in order to successfully obey the Code. This includes being self-disciplined enough to overcome the temptation of arrogance, overconfidence, recklessness, aggression and even curiosity. A Jedi also must be responsible --- practicing honesty and keeping promises, with proper honesty and respect between padawans and masters. Finally, a Jedi honoring the code must participate in public service --- defending the weak, offering aid and providing support whenever it is needed.

    Extra Code

    • The Crystal Code is sometimes considered to be a miscellaneous code that Jedi also follow. This is used in accompaniment of lightsaber use, and is rarer than the original main code.
