How to Knit Afghans on Wooden Looms

104 58

    First Row

    • 1). Create a slip knot with the tail of the yarn and loop the slip knot around the starter peg, which is the horizontal peg on the outside of the loom.

    • 2). Wrap the yarn around each peg from left to right, bringing the yarn around each peg in a clockwise fashion until you reach the end of the loom.

    • 3). Flip the loom around and continue wrapping yarn clockwise around each peg, working from left to right.

    • 4). Wrap a second loop of yarn around the last peg, then work backwards from right to left, but continuing to wrap the yarn in a clockwise fashion. By the time you reach the very start of the loom, each vertical peg should have two loops of yarn on it.

    • 5). Start with the first vertical peg on the leftmost side of the first side you worked. Use the knitting hook to lift the bottom of the two loops up over the top loop and the top of the peg, dropping it off the peg so that only one loop remains.

    • 6). Continue this process, working from left to right on both sides of the rectangular loom until only one loop of yarn remains on each peg.

    • 7). Drop the slip knot from the horizontal peg and run the tail of the yarn through the slip knot to create a permanent knot in the yarn.

    Subsequent Rows

    • 1). Push each remaining loop down lower on the peg to make room for new loops.

    • 2). Repeat the wrapping process so that a new second loop is added to each vertical peg on both the front and back sides of the loom.

    • 3). Repeat the process of lifting the bottom loop up over the peg and dropping it off, leaving only the topmost of the two loops on each peg.

    • 4). Continue this process, working backward and forward on the loom with each new row until you reach the desired length.

    Finishing

    • 1). Add a second loop to the first vertical peg on the loom, then knit off the original loop so that only the secondary loop remains.

    • 2). Use the knitting hook to move the remaining loop to the second vertical peg on the loom. Knit the bottom loop off in the same fashion as before.

    • 3). Continue this process, knitting the bottom loop off and moving the remaining loop to the next peg until you reach the end of the loom.

    • 4). Trim the yarn with several inches remaining and weave the end through the final loop, tightening it like a slip knot. Weave the ends of the yarn into the knitting to hide them.

    • 5). Repeat this process to create as many panels as you need for the desired afghan size. Stitch your afghan panels together to create a single panel using a plastic canvas needle and yarn in the same color as the afghan blanket. Weave the ends in the work to hide them.
