Dietary Information on Tomato Bisque
- Nearly all tomato bisques contain tomatoes, of course, plus either milk or cream. Flour, chicken or beef stock, onion, sugar, butter and cream cheese are other common ingredients. Typical spices include black pepper, bay leaf, parsley or basil.
- Tomato bisque can be prepared in a healthy manner. Cut down on fat by substituting low-fat milk for the cream or use evaporated skim milk. Omit sugar and butter.
- As with all canned soups, when purchasing premade tomato bisque watch out for high sodium levels. Campbell's condensed brand is trans-fat free but contains a whopping 37 percent of the recommended daily value of sodium per serving. Amy's Organic includes a healthy 40 percent of the recommended daily value of Vitamin C and even 12 percent of fiber, but still has 28 percent of sodium per serving.
