    • 1). Shut off the electric power to electric water heaters. Turn the gas control valve on gas water heaters to "pilot."

    • 2). Connect the garden hose to the lower drain spigot located at the bottom of the water heater tank. Stretch the hose to a nearby floor drain or outdoors. Keep the elevation of the hose below the spigot drain elevation.

    • 3). Close the cold water feed valve to the water heater.

    • 4). Open the drain spigot on the water heater tank. Open a nearby hot water faucet. Hot water should begin to drain from the garden hose. Drain the heater tank. Allow all water to exit from the vessel.

    • 5). Flush the water heater tank with cold water by opening the cold-water feed valve. Allow the water to run for five minutes. Shut the cold-water valve off. Drain the remaining flushing water from the tank.

    • 6). Close the drain spigot. Remove the garden hose. Open the cold-water feed valve. Fill the water heater tank. Allow the cold water to exit through the hot water faucet left open earlier. Close the faucet after all air has escaped from the plumbing system. Turn the electric power back on, or switch the gas valve back to heating operation.
