First Aid For Treatment of Back Spasms

My wife recently complained about back spasms.
Because I am the resident expert in the house ( Back surgery in 2009 and months of physical therapy) she came to me for some first aid for treating her back spasms.
Here are the steps we took to relieve the pain and help her get back on her feet..
1.
First realize that most back spasms and pain will go away in a few days.
My wife was scared that she had ruptured her disc like I did and might have to have surgery.
I told her to relax and the pain will go away.
2.
Next I told her to rest and take it easy, not an easy thing when you are running a busy house hold, but she took my advice.
She was not confined to bed, but she did slow down for a few days.
It important not to rest more than 48 hours, after that muscles start to weaken and you are not helping your back by staying in bed longer than two days.
3.
Take some Tylenol, Advil or whatever pain reliever you happen to have in the house.
Continue to take it until the pain goes away.
4.
Use a compress on the affected area.
Now I prefer ice, but my wife likes the heat.
For some alternating ice and heat works.
Hey whatever works! 5.
Get some blood into the area of pain.
Using the compresses will help, but there's nothing like a gentle massage to stimulate the area and get the blood flowing.
6.
Get up and move.
After a short rest period try some gentle exercises, like stretching, or simply walking.
After following these steps I glad to report my wife was back up on her feet in record time.
However if she continued to experience spasms it would have been off to the doctor.
Once you have experienced back spams and pain you definitely do not want to have them again.
First aid for the treatment of back spasm is all well and good, but the real question you should be asking yourself is: "How do you prevent and or cure lower back pain? How do you lose the pain and get on with your life?" Well the answer is to find a system that strengthens the back and abdominal muscles correcting muscle imbalance.
