How to Install a Hot Water Tank Blanket
- 1). Measure the location for the plumbing and wiring areas on the top of the storage water heater.
- 2). Measure and mark the location on the piece of insulation for the top of the water heater.
- 3). Cut slits to position the insulation around plumbing and wiring with a sharp knife.
- 4). Place the top piece of insulation on top of the water heater. Seal all cuts with vinyl tape. Tape the edges of the insulation to the water heater tank.
- 5). Place the large blanket section of the insulation around the water heater tank so the ends meet at a solid area of the tank instead of over access panels.
- 6). Tape the insulation tight against the tank by pulling the ends of the insulation together and securing with vinyl tape. Cover the entire seam with a single piece of vinyl tape.
- 7). Use a sharp knife to cut out the insulation around the bottom drain spigot.
- 8). Locate the access panels on the water heater and cut an X-shape in the insulation directly over the panel. Fold the edges of the insulation under the insulation and tape around the access panel so the panel is completely accessible.
- 9). Place the insulation belts over the top and bottom of the insulation approximately one foot from the edge of the insulation. Do not place belts over access panels or the drain spigot.
