    Making Your Paper Ball Ornament

    • 1). Draw 12 separate 5-inch circles with a pencil on separate pieces of card stock. Use your compass or circle template.

    • 2). Draw a 4-inch circle within one of the 5-inch circle frames. Draw another 3-inch circle within the 4-inch circle frame. Repeat with your 11 remaining circles.

    • 3). Cut along the edge of the 5-inch circle from each of your 12 pieces of card stock with scissors. Do not cut out the inner circles. Use a pushpin to puncture each circle's center.

    • 4). Divide one of the 5-inch circles into five even sections with your protractor. Draw a line from the circle's center to the circle's rim to separate each section. You will have five lines, and you should have five visible pie slices within your circle. Repeat with the remaining 11 circles.

    • 5). Draw a dotted line connecting each pie slice's end point. Carol Duvall recommends in her book "Paper Crafting with Carol Duvall" that you "...draw a line between each of the adjacent dots on the circumference. The length of the lines should all be the same." You should have a visible five-sided pentagon within your circle. Repeat with the remaining 11 circles.

    • 6). Score the dotted lines of one of your pentagons with your scoring tool or bone folder. Fold back all five sides along the scored dotted lines. You should have five folded flaps. Repeat with the remaining 11 circles.

Make sure the pencil drawing and folded flaps are facing you. This will ensure that the pencil markings are not seen when your ornament is complete.

    • 7). Cut out the 3-inch center circle from all 12 5-inch circles. Do not discard.

Adding Family Photos to Your Paper Ball Ornament

    • 1). Scan family photos into your personal computer. You can select a specific theme for your ornament, such as a holiday or birthday gathering.

    • 2). Resize your photos in your photo-editing software into a 3-inch diameter to ensure that your photos are not cut off when placed into the ornament. Add a solid circle border rim to make the circle 4 inches in diameter. You will be adding acid-free adhesive to the border to adhere it to the back side of each of your 5-inch circles.

    • 3). Print out your 12 photo circles onto inkjet photo paper. Cut the printed photos out with scissors. Flip your 5-inch circles over so the folded flaps and pencil circle rim markings are facing you.

    • 4). Place your photos on your work table, facing you. Brush a light coating of acid-free adhesive to one of the photo's rims with a sponge tool or brush applicator. Position the photo face-down onto the 4-inch pencil rim of one circle. Use the rim as your guide to ensure that your photo is evenly centered. Repeat with your other 11 photos.

You can opt to glue the 3-inch circle to the back of your photo as a backing. (See section 1, step 7.)

    • 5). Brush a light coating of the acid-free adhesive onto the five flaps of one photo circle with your sponge tool or brush. Glue five photo circles to each flap. You will have six pieces glued together. Make sure the flaps are facing you and that the photos are facing down on your work table. It will appear basket-shaped. This will be your ball's upper half.

Repeat this step with the remaining six circles. This will be your ball's bottom half.

    • 6). Brush another light coating of your adhesive onto the flaps and glue both halves together. Your paper ornament will form.

You can opt to punch a hole onto a single flap prior to connecting the two halves together and run a piece of fishing line to hang your photo paper ball ornament.
