How to Install Ceramic Tile in a Diagonal Pattern
- 1). Measure the distance between the two corners of the same wall, using a measuring tape. Mark the center point on that wall by dividing the number by two. Make a mark 6 inches on either side of the center mark, using a pencil. Repeat this for the remaining walls.
- 2). Drive a nail at an upward angle on one of the center marks and the two 6-inch marks on either side, using a hammer. Hook the chalk box line on one of the nails and pull the chalk line across the room to the corresponding mark on the opposite wall. Pull the line tight and pop a line on the floor. Repeat this with the 6-inch marks and then the remaining walls.
- 3). Place a tile on the floor so that the corners of the tile touch the 6-inch lines. Note that where the middle chalk lines intersect is the center of the room. The center of the first tile will cover this point.
- 4). Draw the pattern of the tile on the floor with a pencil. Apply thinset mortar inside the diamond with a notched trowel. Set the tile in place and push on it gently to be sure of a solid bond between the tile and the floor.
- 5). Repeat Step 4, moving to the left and the right to complete the first row. Place a spacer where the corners of the tiles meet. Allow for the spacer when using a wet saw to cut the last tile of each row.
