- New Toro mowers are not sold containing fuel or oil. You must add both before you use the mower for the first time. New purchases do usually come with a small (usually 20-ounce) bottle of starter oil, which is sufficient to fill the engine. You can also purchase the oil on your own; you will also need about 1 gallon of unleaded gasoline to fill the tank for the first mow.
- Older lawnmowers take a mixture of gas and oil; new Toro mowers feature a separate crankcase to which you add only oil. Toro recommends the use of SAE 30W detergent engine oil, a standard weight and grade available at auto supply stores and convenience-store gas stations. The company also specifies that the oil have a service classification of SF, SG, SH or SJ, according to the API grades.
- To fill your Toro mower with oil, remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug and place the wire on the retaining post, if your mower has one. Locate the dipstick, which is inserted into the oil fill tank. Consult the manual if you can't find the dipstick. Remove the dipstick and pour in the oil, checking the level on the dipstick until it reaches the "Full" mark indicated on the stick. Do not overfill the oil tank. Replace the dipstick; gas up the mower and proceed.
- Toro recommends that you change the oil after the first two hours of operation and then every year or 25 hours of operation, whichever comes first. Run the engine for a few minutes to heat the oil, then turn off the mower, remove the dipstick and tip the mower on its side to drain the oil completely into a pan. Pour fresh oil into the mower until the oil level reaches the "Full" mark. Check the oil regularly; if the oil level falls below the "Add" mark, top off the fill tank.
