Putting is where the rubber meets the road.
The more putts you make the lower your scores.
There are many factors that go into the game of golf and this includes the way you putt.
Understanding the proper posture and ball position will go a long way to improving your putting skills.
You may not be aware of it, but posture is a big factor on how effective you are when putting.
Contrary to popular belief, your stance can make a difference in your results.
It is best to start with your feet about shoulder width apart.
This will keep your body sturdy and balanced.
Another thing that you want to do is bend at your hips when you address the ball.
Understand that this is completely different to bending your back or stooping over.
Try this technique to get a feel for the difference between the two.
Squeeze your shoulders behind you like you are trying to touch your elbows behind your back.
Now, bend over the golf ball.
By doing this you will prevent yourself from bending at the back.
This should give you a better idea of how it feels to bend from your hips.
In this position you can now let your arms hang down naturally.
Your arms will bend at the elbow when you are gripping your putter.
Now that you have a feel for the correct setup for your body, we need to discuss the correct positioning of the golf ball within your stance.
In order to have consistency in your putting your ball position should be the same every time.
The rule you should apply is to position your golf ball just too where your eyes are directly over the ball.
This gives you the ability to look directly down the line of your putt.
The next thing that needs to be taken into account is where within your stance the ball should be at address.
Set your putter in the center of your stance and then place the ball in front of the putter.
This will have the ball about one inch forward of center in your stance.
That is the ideal position for the ball.
This may seem like a lot to think about to prepare for a putt, but when you take the time to practice the tips above your putting will improve dramatically.
Improving your putting skills starts with having the proper posture and ball position.
