How to Save Thousands of Dollars on Everyday Things
Times are tough for just about everybody.
The recession that began towards the end of 2008 that has continued on consistently well into 2010 is hurting just about everybody across the board and there really is no end in sight.
Luckily there are many things that we can do to help lower costs and save a ton of money on everyday things, and that's what I'm going to talk about in this article today.
Because of the recession and new finance laws, many banks are beginning to pile on the fees even for ordinary things like checking accounts.
One tip to avoid these fees is by shopping around on the Internet to find banks that aren't charging fees.
Most of the time these are smaller banks that may operate thousands of miles from where you live but with online banking you can still use them fairly easily to save yourself hundreds of dollars in fees per year.
Next you should not use your credit cards to purchase large items because the interest fees will kill you.
But you should use your credit card to purchase ordinary things like groceries and gas for your car as well as any monthly utility bills you have.
This allows you to use the float, that is, the interest-free loan your credit card gives you for the first month as long as you pay off your balance in full each month.
Essentially this gives you free money for one whole month and if you invest it, even in a savings account, you can earn hundreds of dollars of interest throughout the year.
This will also save you a ton of money on check printing fees because you'll essentially only have to write one check each month, to pay off your credit card bill instead of tens of hundreds of checks to different places to pay your bills.
Of course, this only works if you pay off your credit card bill in full each month and that is very important.
Another way to save money is to purchase your clothes at outlet malls and outlet stores or by ordering through discount mail-order catalogs like Sierra trading post and others.
You have to be careful because sometimes you can get low quality clothes this way, but if you play your cards right you can find designer clothes at incredibly reduced prices.
Finally, save money at home by calling up your utility companies and asking them for a free energy evaluation.
Many utility companies will actually give away freebies that help reduce your energy costs each month such as special light bulbs or energy efficient thermostats to help lower your energy costs.
So there you have just a few very simple tips that can literally save you thousands of dollars every year on regular things that you are going to buy anyway.
This recession is tough and only getting tougher but with these tips hopefully you can make the best of a bad situation and even come out ahead.
