Sunrise Adventures Announces 4th Annual Alpinist/Smuggs Ice Bash
Jeffersonville, VT - Vermont's premiere ice-climber gathering and winter gear expo weekend draws climbers from across the Northeast to Triple Diamond Sports in Jeffersonville, on the north side of Smuggler's Notch State Park, January 29-31. The Alpinist/Smuggs Ice Bash enables visitors to try new equipment from all the major manufacturers at no charge while technical reps stand by to answer questions. Alpinist Magazine, also headquartered in Jeffersonville, has joined Sunrise Adventures as a co-host.
The popularity of ice climbing has skyrocketed over the last decade as new equipment and mainstream exposure have made the sport more accessible and enjoyable. During the long Vermont winters, outdoor enthusiasts have made the natural progression from snowshoeing and skiing to ice-climbing and ski mountaineering - "Ten years ago, you could climb in the Notch and not see any other teams, even on a bluebird day" says Bert Severin, head guide for Sunrise Adventures Climbing School - "Today, it's not uncommon to pass 20 other climbers on the road."
The Smuggs Ice Bash is unique because of its location. Nestled between two major ski areas, "The Notch" is one of the most accessible climbing areas in the country. Visitors can park their car, visit the gear and vendor hut, take a shuttle back and forth to the Notch, and walk a few hundred yards to several different establishments for après-climbing. The atmosphere is laid-back and festive; with socializing forms an important element of the weekend.
The guides at Sunrise Adventures offer clinics for all skill levels from 8:45 am to 3:30 pm each day. From ice primers for the novice to companion rescue techniques for the veteran, there is something for everyone. All equipment is provided; participants should wear warm ski clothing. Preregistration is available at http://www.sunriseadventuresports.com or at 802.730.2978.
