Is BP Using It"s Whole Brain?
The Gulf Oil Crisis is a useful example to explore the topic in real life.
BP is one of the biggest and most successful companies on the planet, currently ranked 4th in the world.
The primary competitive asset they have is scientific and and engineering prowess.
That represents perhaps 2 of the 4 major types of intelligence.
But what will happen with the company as a result of the current crisis? The media has been attacking the company from many angles, both for technical incompetence (previously their strength) as well as the reaction and handling of their Public Relations, or lack thereof.
The CEO, Tony Heyward, who received his PHD in Geology at the age of 22, who has been a shining example of technical leadership, has managed to anger nearly everyone outside of BP in the handling of the crisis.
Here is an example of technical smarts, but stupidity in understanding the human side of the issue.
So there are two types of lack of intelligence occurring in this mess.
First, BP has not shown creativity and innovation in stopping the flow of oil.
It appears that they are applying standard practices with little variation from past procedures.
This demonstrates how your own expertise can blind you from new ways of thinking.
They have resisted reviewing ideas from the outside scientific and engineering communities including those from Innocentive, an independent company that funds innovative ideas from the larger scientific and engineering communities, were told to post their ideas on the BP website, and would not connect them to the decision makers.
Second, outside of the $50 million ad campaign that most perceive as a failure in arresting people's fears and concerns, they continue to pretty much ignore the human implications of the crisis - demonstrating another example of lack of whole brain thinking.
There is virtually no public support of their efforts.
In fact, the ignorance of this critical type of intelligence has managed to ire even the President, who has been highly criticized for remaining "cool," to declare he is ready to "kick some asses.
" (see interview with NBC Matt Lauer) So here is an example of how smart people can really be stupid by not using the "Whole Brain.
" It can ruin a career, or possibly break a company.
Now that we have examined a real life example of lack of whole brain thinking, I'd like to invite you to learn how you can learn to use your whole brain for better thinking, problem solving, and improved communication go to: Think with Your Whole Brain.
