    • 1). Remove all objects and materials that could catch fire away from the area around the kiln. In the interest of safety, they should be at least one foot away.

    • 2). Ensure the area in which the kiln will be fired is properly ventilated. If you're operating the kiln in an open area outside, it may not be necessary to take steps regarding ventilation. If you're operating the kiln indoors or in a confined space outdoors, ventilation is necessary. Have an HVAC manufacturer install a ventilation system above your kiln if it doesn't come with such a system. Be sure to turn it on before use.

    • 3). Hook the kiln up to its gas source (e.g., natural gas or propane). Turn on the gas. Adjust the air/gas flow by turning the adjustment shutter plate. It's recommended that the shutter be opened one-quarter of an inch for natural gas kilns and between three-eighths of an inch and half an inch for propane kilns.

    • 4). Light the kiln using the ignition system. This is done by first pressing and holding the red button found on the magnetic valve. After holding the button for 60 seconds, light the pilot and turn the gas valve to light the burners. When the gas settings are correct, all the flames will look similar and have the same height.

    • 5). Load items to be heated, burned or dried onto one of the kiln's selves. These kilns can house multiple shelves. Allow around one inch of space between each of the shelves. Also allow three inches of space above the bottom of the kiln. These spaces allow for proper airflow and ventilation, resulting in a higher quality performance and enhanced safety.
