There has been a link for sometime between fibromyalgia (FM) and sleep. Some researchers feel that fibromyalgia is caused due to a lack of deep sleep, that usually takes 4 hours of continued sleep. Over a period of time, the inability to relax, due to the loss of sleep, causes a gradual tensing of muscles, which continues to keep FM sufferers from getting deep sleep. Symptoms of FM include generalized, widespread muscle soreness, aching and constant fatigue. Other symptoms include, lack of drive, depression and digestive disorders or bowel problems, even tingling and numbness of the extremities. It"s the most common disorder of women between the ages of 40 and 60 years old and is the 3rd most common of the rheumatologic disorders.

These symptoms are most often chronic in there nature (at least 4 months or more) thus causing most patients to complain of depression and loss of drive. There depression, coupled with the lack of sleep, further causes FM sufferers to become moody, irritable, and less tolerant of family members and friends. This can also cause inactivity, lack of exercise, weight gain, substance abuse and poor dietary habits. Taken all together, their FM conditions worsen, causing dependence on medications that can cause severe side effects and worsening of other health conditions. FM sufferers that focus on getting more sleep, can find some relief of their conditions and help relax painful and tight muscles of the spine.

Natural chiropractic care will help relief tension and stress on painful muscles of the spine and relieve chronic inflammation on the nerves of the spine. Co-management with other health professionals, such as a rheumatologist and psychologist can also be helpful. If FM is caused due to a digestive disorder such as irritable bowel syndrome, it is important for dietary changes be made and managed by a health care professional.

Many patients with fibromyalgia will benefit from increasing their exercise activity, moving towards a rigorous program of exercise. Exercise increased endorphins in the body, which block pain and elevate moods. Exercise has been shown in many studies to help FM sufferers with stress reduction and chronic fatigue that is often times associated with FM. Chiropractic care, in addition to aiding in FM symptoms, can also help relieve the soreness that occurs after exercising. A complete non-drug approach to treating FM, starts with exercise and nutrition, and ends with a trip to see your neighborhood chiropractor.
