How to Wire a 100 Amp Sub Panel
- 1). Locate a convenient entry point for your electrical supply cable. Pry a knockout plug out of your sub panel with a screwdriver. The knockout holes are the pre-perforated circles in the box. These eliminate the need for drilling to insert your wiring through the walls and back of your panel.
- 2). Install a cable clamp in the hole. Unscrew the two halves of the clamp. Insert the threaded end of the clamp through the outside of the box. Thread the upper half of the clamp tightly onto the lower half to secure it in place.
- 3). Thread the supply cable through the cable clamp. Tighten the clamp with a screwdriver.
- 4). Remove the outer insulating jacket from the length of electrical cable inside the sub panel with a utility knife. Do not damage the insulating jacket on the individual conducting wires.
- 5). Remove 1/2-inch of insulation from the ends of each conductor with a wire stripper.
- 6). Insert the red and black conductors into the lugs at the top of the power bar and tighten them in place with a screwdriver. In panels equipped with a main breaker, attach the wires to the terminals on the breaker switch.
- 7). Attach the white conductor to the large terminal at the top of the left-hand neutral bus bar. The neutral bus bars are located on either side of the center, or hot, bars and have screw-down terminals. The hot bus bar lacks screw down terminals. The breakers are attached to the hot side of the circuit with built-in clips. Both hot and neutral bars are isolated from the metal box by plastic mounts.
- 8). Attach the bare ground wire to the ground bus bar. The ground bus bar is the bar located closest to the outside on both sides of the panel. These are attached directly to the back of the box without insulating mounts.
- 9). Turn off the power in your main panel. The main breaker for this panel is located at the top center of the panel. It will be the largest breaker on the panel. Shutting this breaker off cuts off all power to your house.
- 10
Loosen an existing cable clamp in the main panel. Feed at least 18-inches of cable into the panel and tighten the clamp. Strip the full length of the outer insulating jacket off the portion of the cable inside the box. - 11
Remove ½-inch of insulation from the ends of the conductor with a wire stripper. - 12
Attach the white wire to the neutral bus bar. Attach the bare ground wire to the ground bar. Inserting the wires into the holes on their respective bars and tightening the mounting screws attach these. The mounting screws are provided with each panel, in place and ready for use. - 13
Attach the red and black conductors to your 100-amp, 240-volt breaker. Insert one bare conductor into each of the breaker's two terminal slots and tighten the terminal screws securely. - 14
Snap the breaker in place in an empty slot in the main panel and restore power by turning on the main breaker.
