If you're planning to travel to Budva in Montenegro allow me to let you in on a few things that you may well not have known about this beautiful destination.
You may even be thinking, where is Montenegro?Not as well-known as many other destinations, Budva has a Bohemian atmosphere that may just make you want to come back.
Budva is the main tourist resort on the little known Montenegrin coast and boasts a classic mix of the old and the new.
What makes this town particularly attractive are the breath-taking glimpses of the Montenegrin mountains that you catch as you amble around the many narrow streets and alleyways.
Here are a few more things you may not have known about this hidden gem of a destination.
  • Budva has a population of just under 20,000 outside of the tourist season.
  • The Budvan municipality is 38km long and stretches from Jaz to Bulijarica.
  • This port town experienced a major earthquake in 1667 and had to be virtually rebuilt.
    Another quake struck in 1979 and most of the restoration work from the damage this quake caused has now been completed.
    The region was recognised in 1979 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
  • Budva is sometimes known as "Mini-Dubrovnik".
  • The town is situated on the Adriatic coast.
  • Slovenska beach is the town's main beach and is around 1600 metres long.
  • The Rolling Stones played on local Jaz beach in July 2007.
  • Another beach near to the old town is known as Richards Head after the famous actor Richard Widmark who starred in the film The Long Ships in 1964, which was filmed on location in Budva.
  • The 200 metre long Queens Beach is around 500 metres away from Sveti Stefan on the Budvan Peninsula and is said to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the area.
    This west facing beach offers a spectacular sunset and is the beach of choice for the better off local and tourist.
  • The towns pedestrian promenade is host tomany open-air clubs during the summer months, although they are only allowed to play music until 1.

    After this you can make your way to one of the towns numerous indoor venues.
  • Italian is widely spoken in the town.
  • The town hosts an annual Music Festival and plays host to many visitors from the world of Theatre and the Arts throughout the summer season.
  • The island of St.
    Nicholas, the only island in the vicinity, lies just off the coast of Budva and can be seen clearly from The Old Town area.
Montenegro is a fascinating country and visitors often comment on the friendliness of the locals.
