How to Grout a Slate Floor

    • 1). Install your slate tiles with proper spacing between the tiles (generally, 1/8 inch). Let them set for at least 24 hours. Thoroughly sweep the floor.

    • 2). Brush tile sealant onto the surface of the tiles, starting at the edge of the floor farthest from the doorway and working your way out of the room. Brush it on in a thin, even coat, with all the brush strokes in the same direction. Avoid letting the sealant form bubbles. Avoid getting the sealant in the lines between the tiles.

    • 3). Let the sealant set for 12 hours.

    • 4). Spread unsanded grout over six to 10 of the tiles, starting at the same far side of the room. Spread it with a grout squeegee to force it into the lines while scraping it off the face.

    • 5). Let the grout sit for five minutes while you proceed to spread more grout over the next section of six to 10 tiles. Go back to the first section and wipe up the excess grout with a dampened sponge.

    • 6). Proceed section by section, spreading the grout, letting it sit, then wiping up the excess. Do the whole floor.

    • 7). Let the grout set for a week or more. Brush tile sealant over the whole floor, including the grout lines, putting it down in a thin, even layer as before. Let the sealant set for 24 hours.
