How to Make Porcelain Elephants
- 1). Buy pre-mixed liquid porcelain, as preparing porcelain from raw materials is challenging. Buy a porcelain mold for slip-casting, which is made of two or several parts and has an opening at the top. Most slip-casting molds are made of plaster.
- 2). Pour the liquid porcelain in a bucket. Stir the liquid porcelain to ensure that the heavier clay particles don't remain at the bottom of the mixture.
- 3). Identify the top part of the mold. Pour the liquid porcelain into the mold through the opening at the top and fill the entire mold. Allow the porcelain to dry in the mold. The plaster absorbs the moisture from the porcelain and the figure hardens.
- 4). Remove the mold after making sure the figurine has hardened. Allow the porcelain to dry 12 to 24 hours.
- 5). Sand the dry figurine with fine grit sandpaper to ensure the surface is smooth. Wipe the elephant with a damp sponge.
- 6). Perform a bisque firing to cone 6 or 1,800 to 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit. The firing vitrifies the porcelain. Allow the porcelain to cool down.
- 7). Apply glazes on your porcelain elephant using a soft paintbrush. Alternatively, use glazes that can be sprayed on porcelain. Don't paint the bottom of the figurine.
- 8). Fire the glazed figurine to cone 8 to 10 or between 2,200 and 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit.
