Homemade Metal Fence
- Copper pipes, copper cross connectors, copper T connectors and copper elbows are the only plumbing supplies you will need to make a metal fence. The fence design will determine how much pipe and how many connectors you'll need. To make a 4-foot section of a 4-foot-tall fence with a rail across the top and a rail in the center, you'll need two 4-foot pipes as horizontal rails and two 5-foot pipes as the posts. Each of the posts will be inserted 12 inches into the ground. Use copper T connectors to join the top rails, copper cross connectors to join the center rails and copper elbows at the corners of the fence. A pipe cutter and a measuring tape will also come in handy.
There are two ways to attach the copper pipe to the copper connectors for a fence: with solder or with glue. Waterproof construction adhesive will work to attach the copper pipe to the copper fittings. This process is faster than soldering the copper together. To solder the copper, you will need flux, solder and a propane torch. - The two fence sections at the end of the fence will be constructed slightly differently from the main fence sections. To make an end section of a 4-foot-tall fence, cut two 5-foot-long sections of copper pipe. Cut each pipe 2 feet from one end so you can attach the cross connector to join the center rail. Connect one pipe back together with a copper T. This is the end post. Connect one section of pipe back together with a copper cross. This is the post that will connect to the next section of the fence. Attach an elbow to the top of the end post and a copper T to the remaining post. The elbow pipe is the corner of the fence. The copper T will allow you to connect the next section of metal fencing.
Cut two 4-foot-long copper pipes as center rails for the fence. These pipes will run horizontally between the vertical pipe posts to connect them together. The top rail will fit between the open end of the elbow and one of the T connector openings. The center rail will fit between the open end of the copper T and the side opening on the copper cross.
Once the end section is complete, continue to add sections for the length of the fence. Each successive section has one post with a copper cross in the center and a copper T at the top.
