How to Prevent Low-Temperature Sludge
- 1). Change the oil in your vehicle on a regular basis, every 3,000 miles or 200 hours of engine running time. Engine running time includes when you have parked the car and left the engine running as well as idling time at stop lights and in traffic jams.
- 2). Maintain the proper coolant or antifreeze levels in your vehicle. Coolant needs to be a 50-50 mix of water and coolant. Ask a mechanic at a quick oil change establishment to check this and add more coolant, if necessary.
- 3). Take your vehicle for a "tune-up" twice a year, once before winter and once before summer. Keep your vehicle in good working condition by having all of the fluid levels — including antifreeze, oil and brake fluid — checked and replaced, as necessary. Replace your air filters regularly.
- 4). Keep the engine running smoothly by periodically adding fuel-injector cleaners and "dry gas." Fuel-injector cleaners remove any carbonized materials that have built up on the fuel injectors. Dry gas contains alcohol that will remove water from the gas tank.
