How to Cut a Horizontal Board in a Load-Bearing Wall
- 1). Measure the length of the load-bearing wall. Run a tape measure from the stud in one corner to the stud at the end of the wall in the other corner. Record the measurement from end to end.
- 2). Run the tape measure along the 2-by-4 board and mark across it with a pencil where the cut needs be made. Set a second board of the same size directly underneath and screw the two together. Insert a screw at each end of the board to hold the two in place.
- 3). Set up a sawhorse on each end of the roof and set the board on two sawhorses. Line the mark of the board up with the blade of a circular saw and press down the button to turn on the saw.
- 4). Run the blade of the circular right across the line to cut the pieces in two. Blow off the sawdust and line up the board along the top of the vertical studs to make sure the correct cut has been made. Repeat the process for all the other horizontal cuts that need to be made.
