    • 1). Use your hammer and pry bar to remove all the floor trim from the room. Remove it intact so you can reinstall it later. Set it aside.

    • 2). Lay your foam underlayment over the whole floor in rows, taping together the sides of the rows with duct tape. Cut the underlayment pieces at the ends with a razor knife.

    • 3). Set your first course of floorboards along the longest wall in the room, with the edges of the boards sitting about 3/8 of an inch from the wall to allow for expansion. Clip the boards together at the ends by their interlocking grooves. Using a miter saw, cut the end pieces to fit.

    • 4). Lay subsequent courses one by one, locking the sides of the boards together and cutting them at the ends with your miter saw. Make sure to stagger the end seams so they don't line up from course to course. Cover the entire floor, keeping the 3/8-inch expansion gap at all the walls.

    • 5). Reinstall your floor trim, covering up the expansion gap.
