    • 1). Ask your friends and neighbors for recommendations. First-hand accounts of reliability and craftsmanship are powerful indicators of quality. Also check the website of the local Better Business Bureau to search for contractors in your area. Reports are provided for each company free of charge. You can also look for construction companies in your local phone directory or regional website. Look under "Contractors," "Construction" and "Home Improvement."

    • 2). Visit the website of the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, then go to the License Search and Verification page. Here, you can check to see whether each prospective construction company is currently licensed. Select either "Contractors" or "Home Improvement," according to the value of the work you want completed. Enter the firm or individual name, and the license number if you have it. You can also search according to location. The resulting page will include current license status and classification, among other information.

    • 3). Check to see whether any of the remaining companies are on Tennessee's Problem Contractor List, available online. The contractors included on this list failed to respond to a Department of Commerce notice of consumer complaint within the last two years.
