In America, heart disease is one of the leading causes of death and comes in second only to cancer in its fatality.
Sadly, many of these deaths could have been completely prevented if these people had only chosen to make changes in their diet and other aspects of their lifestyle.
Knowing the warning signs of heart disease could have also helped reduce this number since more people would have known when it might be the right time to seek medical help early.
Among the most common signs of this serious disease are chest pains which can still be the result of several other medical conditions.
If the chest pain lasts for only about 5 to 10 minutes and then goes away it is most likely not heart related but it is still a good idea to have it checked out anyway.
Pains that occur on a regular basis are even more serious and you should never hesitate to seek medical advice for them.
Shortness of breath is also a warning sign often related to cardiac problems.
This is one of the symptoms that is difficult to pinpoint to an exact cause however.
Over exertion and many other things can also cause the same problem to arise.
Generally, if the problem is occurring during times when you are not being physically active you should get medical help as soon as possible though.
Also speak to your doctor is it is taking more than 5 minutes or so to start breathing normally after you have been physically active.
Palpitations can also be a dangerous sign to look out for.
Palpitations are a beating of the heart that you feel more strongly than normal and often make you feel uncomfortable.
This sign can occur with other conditions as well but if it is accompanies by a feeling of being light headed you should seek medical attention immediately.
If the symptom is found to not be cardiac related you can try reducing the amount of caffeine you are consuming, get more sleep or cut out alcohol to see if that takes care of the problem for you.
These are just the most common symptoms you should be watching out for of course.
Anytime you feel something isn't right it is always safer to talk to your doctor about it so they can rule out any serious conditions before they become life threatening.
If your doctor does find something they can get you on the right track to keeping the problem under control and offer advice as to what you can do to better your health.
