How to Cross Stitch for Beginners When the Canvas Is Blank?
- 1). Find the center of the fabric by folding the fabric horizontally, then pinch the fabric along the fold to create a crease. Fold the fabric vertically, and pinch the fabric along the new fold. The place where the two creases meet is the center of the fabric. Place the hoop on the fabric so this center point is in the center of the hoop opening.
- 2). Locate the arrows along the sides of the pattern and along the top or bottom to find the center of the pattern. Follow these lines to where they intersect; this is the center of the pattern.
- 3). Begin stitching close to the center of the fabric. Do not pull the floss all the way through. Hold about 1 inch of the floss behind the work. Work the tail into the back of the first few stitches made.
- 4). Find an area in the pattern, close to the center, where there are several stitches of the same color in the same row. Pull the needle through the upper right corner and down through the lower left corner of the first square. Repeat this step as the pattern directs. Create the second step of the stitch by pulling the needle from the upper left corner of the last stitch created, down through the lower right corner. Repeat this step to cover all of the stitches previously created.
- 5). Pull the thread through the backs of three to four stitches to lock the thread in place when completed with the color in each section.
