- 1). Consider speaking with your primary care physician about taking sophora flavescens extract before actually making the decision to purchase it. Since it is an herbal remedy and not a drug, it does not require a prescription, but it could interfere with other medications you may be taking or medical conditions you may already have. If you are taking it for a specific condition, you may also want to discuss other treatment options that your doctor may know about, but that you might not.
- 2). Find pharmacies, groceries and apothecaries that are known to import Chinese products or that operate in traditionally Chinese neighborhoods. Since sophora flavescens extract is very popular in China and much less so in the U.S.A., the best place to look is often in communities with numerous Chinese immigrants or Americans of Chinese descent. When you look for sophora flavescens in these local stores, make sure you're also looking for Ku Shen, the name under which many Chinese-manufactured versions of the herb are sold.
- 3). Contact people in your area who work as herbalists or practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine. Some of them may be able to sell the extract to you directly, but if not, they may be able to suggest other places to look.
- 4). Look for sophora flavescens extract and Ku Shen in alternative and holistic medicine shops. You may find this herb in two forms at stores like these; ideally, you'll be able to find pure powdered extract. You may also find herbal supplements that contain sophora flavescens as part of a blend of several other herbs. If you find the latter, read the nutritional information carefully, as it might contain a very minuscule amount of sophora flavescens or other herbs that you don't necessarily want to take.
