Dr. Rudiger Grube, Chairman Deutsche Bahn (DB Schenker) celebrated his 62nd birthday on 2nd August 2013 marking the arrival of the first ever cargo train from Zhengzhou in China at the freight yard in Hamburg - his hometown.

The voyage on the Eurasian rail route covered 10,214 kilometers passing through China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus and Poland to Germany in a record time of just 15 days where DB Schenker was the logistics partner to Zhengzhou for all services outside China. Customs inspection en-route was carried out at Kazakhstan, wherein it plans to establish a system for conducting clearance and control activities along the railway line. The Eurasian Rail network will also tap and target Almaty in Kazakhstan, Nizhny Novgorod in Russia and the port city of Klaipeda in Lithuania as prospective business generating centers.

The train took 15 days compared to the 30 - 40 days of voyage time as taken by container ships, and proved to be about 80 percent cheaper than air, making the rail ideal for goods with a shorter shelf life like electronic products. Even the lower green house gas emissions & fuel efficiency of the rail contributes to an eco-friendly environment, compared to the disastrous pollution caused by Ships. DB Schenker has become the first company in Europe with a fleet of hybrid vehicles in rail freight transport by purchasing four new Alstom hybrid shunting locomotives.

An interesting quote by Jon Ward, Logistics Manager at DB Rail UK stated "Our trains convey the mail faster and more cost-effectively than a lorry; a single train can carry ten times as many letters as an airplane at one-tenth of the cost.

DB Schenker, the transport and logistics arm of Deutsche Bahn (Germany's national railway), had discovered a huge growth potential for carriage of goods on the land corridor linking China and Europe and introduced its first goods train between Beijing and Hamburg in 2008. By 2011 they had set up a regular weekly block train service between China and Germany, primarily catering to the automotive giant BMW with 40 containers heading eastward from the sidings at the Leipzig logistics center to its plant in Shenyang. So far over 4,700 containers have been effectively handled in 120 of their container trains. DB Schenker also has one train departing from Wackersdorf to Shenyang (BMW) every week.
