How Does HPV Affect Pregnancy?

    Risks

    • Having HPV does not increase the chances of miscarriage, premature delivery or other pregnancy complications. The chance of passing the virus onto the baby is very low; even if it is passed on, the baby is usually able to clear it on his own.

    Treatment

    • Usually doctors refrain from treatment during the pregnancy, preferring instead to monitor the cell changes through colposcopies (similiar to Pap smears, except that cells are removed and tested). Treatment happens after the birth. If genital warts are persistent, the doctor can remove them safely.

    Childbirth

    • The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says that the risks of passing on the virus to babies during childbirth are so low that they do not justify the risks of having a cesarean section. If a mother has severe genital warts, there is a risk of the baby getting those warts in his or her throat or that the birth canal will be blocked; in those cases, a cesarean may be more justified.
