How to Build Sun Screens

    • 1). Measure the outside portion of the window where you wish to install the sun screen. Take the measurements of both the width and the height. Make a note of these figures.

    • 2). Determine the size of the corner brackets that you will be using. These are the pieces that connect the bottom and top frames to the side frames. A common size for these pieces is 1/2 inch wide. You need to compensate for the corner pieces when determining your window measurements.

    • 3). Multiply the size of your corner brackets by 2 and subtract this from the width of the window frame to obtain the size that you need to cut the frame. For example, if you are using 1/2-inch corner brackets, and your window is 40 inches wide, you will need to cut the top and bottom width pieces 39 inches (1/2 x 2 =1, 40-1=39). Repeat this process for the height of your window.

    • 4). Measure and cut the sides of the screen frame. Use a hacksaw to cut the pieces at the proper spot, and file down any sharp edges.

    • 5). Assemble the sun screen by sliding the corner brackets into the open ends of the screen frame on the top and bottom sides. Connect the two side pieces to the top and bottom. You should now have a rectangular frame.

    • 6). Place the frame on the ground so that the spline channel, the opening around the edges of the frame, faces upward. Roll out the shade material across the frame. Trim it loosely around the edges with the utility knife

    • 7). Starting in one corner, press the plastic spline over the screen and into the spline channel. Work your way around the perimeter of the sun screen with the spline roller, pressing the spline into the channel as you work your way around the entire frame.
