Upsell by Sending a Thank You Mail
What is understood as a given in the physical world is often ignored in the digital world.
You, as a seller must not forget to thank the customer for his or her business.
This common courtesy is sorely lacking in the online business world and it is a practice which will pay off dividends.
Every sale should be followed up by a thank you e-mail.
The key thing to remember here is that your correspondence is limited to one mailing.
Of course this does not apply if the customer has signed up for your list.
A thank you mail is a polite follow up; more than one mail might be viewed as spam.
Just because a person has bought a product from you does not mean they want to be added to your list.
Your thank you letter should be brief.
You should start off by thanking the person for the purchase and invite them to contact you if they have any questions or concerns with the product.
Remind them of your money back guarantee; if you offer one.
This section of the letter is a key part of the trust building process.
The sales page may have made the same statements but this follow up e-mail shows you intend to stand behind your promises.
The next part of the letter should contain a link to where the customer can go to download an unannounced bonus product.
Most marketers have a ton of products they can use for a bonus.
Try to find one which is similar to the product the customer purchased.
Inform your customer that this is a free gift in appreciation of his or her purchase and explain in a clear manner how they can go about downloading their bonus.
The last part of your letter is where you mentioned another product that you have for sale which the person might be interested in purchasing.
Avoid going into a large sales pitch.
That is the job of the sales page you are linking to and not the job of a thank you letter.
Even though you are selling the product, you want to look like you are passing on some useful information rather than trying to make a sale.
Wrap up the letter by telling your customer that this was a one time mailing.
If you have a mailing list, you can inform your customer how they can sign up for further mailings if they wish to do so.
Wish the person well with all their endeavors and sign the letter with your first and last names.
Even though you have sent this person an unexpected mail and tried to sell them another product, you have done so in a polite and totally acceptable manner.
