How to Apply for Social Security in Minnesota
- 1). Collect the documentation for the benefits for which you are applying. Include your Social Security card, birth certificate, utility bill for proof of Minnesota residency, any pay stubs or other statements of income and one to three years of tax returns. Include medical records if you are applying for Medicare, Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance.
- 2). Locate the closest SSA field office to you by going to the SSA website and clicking the "Find a Social Security Office" link. Type your zip code in the box and click "Locate."
- 3). Visit the local office. Plan for a long wait if you go to the offices located in bigger cities such as Minneapolis or St. Paul. Ask for an application for the benefits you need. Fill out your basic information such as name, date of birth, address and Social Security number. Give other information as needed for the benefits for which you are applying.
- 4). Give the completed application and, if necessary, the original documentation that proves the information you provided on the application, to a representative. The SSA will make copies and send the documents back to you or let you know if it needs more information to process your application.
- 5). You will receive your first benefit payment or your Medicare card approximately 30 days after applying.
