How to Minimize Interstitial Cystitis

Not everyone has the luxury or money to see the doctor for the treatment of interstitial cystitis.
Rather than suffering, there are some things you can do at home to minimize the symptoms of the disorder.
Some of these things involve changing or altering your diet to minimize the symptoms.
Other things involve supplements you can take that have been shown to have an effect on the urinary pain, frequency and urgency seen in interstitial cystitis.
Nutrition is important to the treatment of interstitial cystitis.
You may have food sensitivities or allergies which are causing the symptoms.
It is important to try an elimination diet, in which you eliminate various foods or food types and then you see what is happening to your symptoms.
You can also do a challenge diet and see if eating certain foods triggers the symptoms to occur.
Eating whole, unrefined and unprocessed foods helps control interstitial cystitis.
This includes plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grain products, olive oil, cold water fish, olive oil, nuts and beans.
You need to avoid eating sugar, refined foods, dairy, junk foods and fried foods, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, any caffeinated food or supplement and certain beans, such as fava beans, black beans, lima beans or soy beans.
Carbonated drinks, tomatoes and citrus fruits also make interstitial cystitis worse.
You also need to drink half of your body weight in ounces of fluid, particularly water.
The heavier you are, the more water you need to drink.
Certain supplements and herbal treatments seem to block the symptoms of interstitial cystitis.
Calcium citrate turns the urine alkaline so that it is less irritating on the bladder.
Bromelain is a supplement that blocks the inflammation of the bladder.
You should not take Bromelain when you are about to eat or have recently eaten.
Always use high quality herbal products in order to reduce any side effects associated with taking these products.
One particular herb that seems to work well is gotu kola.
You need to take a standardized extract containing 30 milligrams of triterpenes at three times per day.
It improves the connective tissue of the bladder that provides a mucous membrane layer inside the bladder, which is protective and soothes the bladder.
You can make an herbal tea out of the following herbs in order to ease the symptoms of interstitial cystitis.
One of them is Buchu, which acts to flush out the bladder and is an antiseptic, keeping bacteria and irritants out of the bladder.
Cleavers is another herb used as a tonic for the bladder.
You can also use corn silk which soothes the bladder and has diuretic abilities.
Horsetail tea acts as a diuretic that also heals the tissue within the bladder wall.
Marshmallow root soothes the bladder and is best take as a cold tea.
Put some in cold water for several hours and then strain out the root.
Drink several cups of the tea.
Usnea is an herb that has antiseptic abilities and soothes the bladder.
Homeopathic remedies can be tried to reduce the symptoms of interstitial cystitis.
See a trained homeopathic specialist in order to get the right treatment at the right strength.
Some homeopathic remedies include Apis mellifica, Cantharis (for urgency), Staphysagria and Sarsaparilla, which blocks the pain which occurs after urination.
