Self-Sufficiency Planning

    Plans for Solar Power

    • A simple and increasingly available way to plan self-sufficiency is to obtain power from the sun. Solar energy is clean and renewable. Solar panels that convert sunlight to energy can be used to provide electricity for the basic needs of a home. A rechargeable battery stores the energy captured in daylight and solar home systems provide the required wiring for home use. Solar systems can also provide energy to pump water in remote areas.

    Plans for Wind Power

    • Another way to become more self-sufficient by providing off the grid energy is to use wind power. While wind power can be provided by a simple standard generator and a coil turning around magnets, home wind turbines are not as reliable as solar energy panels. A drawback is that low wind will not produce much power, while too much wind can harm the turbine. However, improvements such as deep-cycle batteries allowing the individual to sell excess power back to the grid are making wind power worth looking into when planning self-sufficiency.

    Planning a Water Source

    • People who are aware that we waste much of our drinkable water are motivated to become more self-sufficient in providing their own water supply. While going off-grid for water is an ambitious idea, systems such as rainwater harvesting systems preserve water and prevent waste. You might also want to move closer to a water source and use a high-quality water filter. If so, include extra filter cartridges in your plan.

    Planning to Provide Food

    • Discuss your dietary requirements with a professional such as a nutritionist or doctor before planning to provide your own food. Start off by growing your own vegetables. Fruit trees are also easy to grow. If you live in a rural area, you might be able to keep chickens and bees to produce food. Plan to include all the recommended food groups in the right proportion, including dairy products, meat and beans in addition to fruits and vegetables. Keep in mind that you might have to purchase some food to maintain a balanced diet.
