Yeast infections can appear for numerous reasons. It can be because of the weather, hormone levels in the body or the types of foods you might be eating. So to keep things simple, I have put together a short list for you: the top 5 causes for yeast infections.

1. The Immune System

Say what? What does the immune system have to do with yeast infection? Well, the truth is that the immune system is responsible for keeping the body protected from many different diseases. When your immune system is at its lowest point, the body is exposed to all kinds of possible infections, such as yeast infection. With a lowered immune system, it allows for rapid bacterial growth. Therefore it is always important to get plenty of sleep and keep your immune system up and working at its best.

2. Antibiotics

The body is composed of both good and bad bacteria. There is just enough of each to keep the body in balance. But when you take antibiotics, it blindly destroys all the bacteria in the body, both the good and the bad. So this leaves the body wide open for the yeast to develop -- which is not bacteria by the way -- to grow rapidly with no good bacteria to stop it.

3. Diabetes

You would think that when you have diabetes, your main focus would be to monitor your sugar levels. Well, now you can monitor your sugar levels while wondering if you might be getting a yeast infection as well. A high blood sugar level is a cause for yeast infection because yeast feeds off of the sugar in the body. The more sugar the body has, the faster the yeast will grow which is why diabetics are more susceptible in getting a yeast infection.

4. Personal Hygiene

There is nothing that yeast loves more besides a warm moist breeding environment. This is why it is very important for you to take good care of your body. Keeping yourself dry after a workout or swim by toweling down and changing into clean, dry clothes is a critical step in preventing yeast infections from developing. Stay away from wearing skin tight clothing because it denies the body adequate air ventilation. Without proper ventilation there is a high chance for optimal yeast growth.

5. Sexual Intercourse

Yes, having unprotected sex with a yeast infected person can be a cause for yeast infection as well. You can think of it as a type of sexually transmitted disease, but on the positive side, it can be treated and eliminated from the body in a matter of hours. Nonetheless, you should always practice safe sex.

So now that you know the main causes for yeast infection, it does not mean that these are the only causes. As stated before, yeast infections can be caused by the weather or hormone levels, but the best way to keep from getting infected is to respect and take care of your body. If at any point you develop a yeast infection, understanding the problem and treating it must be first priority.
