With all the stuff you read these days about what's good for you and what's not, it can seem like a minefield when it comes to deciding exactly what you can eat at meal times when you're pregnant.
The big question then is how can you enjoy your food and still give your baby the best start in life? To put it simply, you need to ensure that baby has sufficient nutrients to grow and develop during your pregnancy.
No fancy diet plans or fussy menu required! So here's a quick summary of what you should include in a healthy daily diet, and how it will help you and your baby.
Carbohydrates - you need plenty of starchy foods in your diet like bread, pasta and potatoes as these provide you with a steady source of energy.
Fibre - If you're including wholemeal bread and pasta in the carbohydrate intake then you'll be getting plenty of dietary fibre.
This will help prevent you from suffering constipation.
Vitamins & Minerals - you should be aiming to eat the good old 5 a day.
That's 5 portions of fruit and veggies every day to provide essential vitamins and minerals.
These include Vitamin C that will help with your iron absorption, and the Folic Acid that helps you build healthy red blood cells.
Calcium is also important as it helps grow strong bones.
You'll find it in dairy products such as milk and cheese.
Protein - You can get protein from eating meat and fish.
But there are alternatives such as eggs and pulses if you're vegetarian.
Your baby needs protein to grow healthy new muscle and skin cells.
There are going to be times when you just can't face a proper meal; either because of nausea or as you pregnancy progresses.
In this situation snacks also become an important part of your pregnancy diet.
So when planning your snacks try to choose a healthy option like fresh fruit, yoghurt, breakfast cereal or a simple sandwich of ham or low fat cheese.
Yes nutrition is important, but I hope you can now see that it's not too difficult to achieve.
