How to Install a Towel Bar in Tile
- 1). Hold the towel bar in place where you want it to be mounted. With a pencil, mark the location of the screw holes for one of the mounting brackets. Place a level on the bar, adjust the location of the opposite mounting bracket so the bar will be level and mark those screw locations.
- 2). Stick two pieces of tape over each of the holes in an "X" pattern. Clear tape will allow the screw hole marks to show through. If using opaque tape, be sure to transfer the hole locations. Tape offers more friction than glass-smooth tile. So the drill bit has less tendency to wander.
- 3). Insert a 1/4-inch carbide masonry bit into a drill and bore the first mounting hole. Double check the location of the second hole by holding up the mounting bracket. Drill it; then double check the other hole locations before drilling them.
- 4). Mount the bar and bracket assembly with screws if you drilled into a wall stud. Use screws long enough to reach through the tile, drywall and backerboard, then into the stud. Screws at least 2 1/2 inches long are needed. Be sure not to overtighten as the pressure could crack the tiles.
- 5). Tap straight, fluted wall anchors into the holes if you did not hit a wall stud. Be sure to use straight anchors, not the tapered kind which offer less holding power. Insert screws through the mounting brackets and into the anchors, which will expand to fill the opening as screws are inserted.
- 6). Attach the decorative hardware that came with the towel bar over the mounting brackets and tighten the set screws to secure them in place.
