How to Paint Terracotta Planters

    • 1). Wash and dry your terracotta planter pots to remove any soil or debris. New pots are easiest to paint, but recycled pots work well, as long as they have been cleaned.

    • 2). Tape the rim of the pot with masking tape or painter's tape, if you desire to leave the rim unpainted. Unpainted rims make an attractive contrast to brightly colored pots. When several pots are displayed together the unpainted rims work together to create a unified look.

    • 3). Cover the work area with old newspapers or a tarp. It is easy to over-spray when using spray paint.

    • 4). Spray the outside of the pot or planter with smooth, even strokes following the directions on the can. Holding the nozzle too close to the planter may create unsightly drips. Spray a thin, even coat of paint.

    • 5). Allow to dry to the touch. Most paint dries within 15 to 30 minutes, allowing you to add a second coat. Check the instructions on your paint to be sure.

    • 6). Spray a second coat of paint on the pot or planter to enhance and deepen the color. Allow to dry completely for 24 hours.

    • 7). Remove the painter's tape when the paint is dry. Fill with soil and display with your favorite plant.
