MedihoneyCalcium Alginate Dressing comes in a variety of sizes in the form of patches used to cover wounds that are partial to full in thickness. These patches are particularly useful for burns and come in sizes ranging from 2" x 2" to 4" x 5" to ¾" x 12" to cover any number of wounds.

Medihoney dressings should be the selected choice when the desire is fast healing, natural ingredients and complete skin restoration. That's why the medical field around the world chooses Medihoney and recommends this line of dressings to patients suffering from acute to chronic burns and wounds. Created by Derma Sciences, these dressings contain active leptospermum honey, a medicinal honey derived from bees who feed upon the pollen and nectar of certain species of plants, namely the Manuka bush found in New Zealand. For this reason, this honey is also referred to as Manuk honey.

Whatever name you want to use, though, the reputed healing properties of this honey and Medihoney dressings remains the same. In fact, it is the only species of honey that has been studied extensively in randomized control studies for efficacy in healing with many studies reporting healing up to 30% faster.

The calcium alginate of this particular Medihoney dressing is created by incorporating aqueous calcium chloride with aqueous sodium alginate. The final product can then be incorporated into wound dressings, with one major benefit being its ability to trap enzymes.Other benefits include calcium alginate's high absorption quality and its ability to cleanse a number of fluid-secreting abrasions. When wound exudate is absorbed by the patch, the medicinal honey is released and the dressing is transformed into a gel that protects, cleanses, and provides a superior healing environment.

Once the Medihoney calcium alginate dressing transforms into gel, it has a higher viscosity level that allows it to remain intact until the dressing is removed. The product also has a unique non-adhesive property that allows it to be removed and dressings changed with no pain or injury to the wound or adjacent skin. The importance of this is at times underestimated in the management of wounds and burns, but indeed important so that the wound surface is not irritated and the healing process setback unnecessarily. Not to mention, removing dressings from wounds and burns is often painful in itself and dreaded by children and adults alike. Choosing a product that limits this "sticking" sensation, thereby reducing pain during dressing changes, really is something to consider; and Medihoney did when it formulated its products.
