Sewing a Beanie Hat
- 1). Measure the circumference of the head of the person who will wear the hat. Measure horizontally just above the eyebrows and ears. Divide this measurement in half and add 1 inch to the final measurement. Measure from the top of the head to the earlobe. Add 4 inches into this measurement.
- 2). Lay out the fabric on a flat, even surface. Mark out two semi-circles, or semi-ovals, utilizing the measurements from the previous step. The flat side of the semi-circle should match the final halved head circumference measurement. The height of the semi-circle should match the final head height measurement. Set the stretch of the fabric across the width of the semi-circle rather than up and down so that it will slide onto the head comfortably. Cut out both semi-circles.
- 3). Lay one semi-circle face up on a flat surface. Lay the second semi-circle on top of the first with the right side of the fabric facing down. Pin along the curved edge of the semi-circles. Sew along the pinned, curved edge of the beanie hat and remove the pins as you sew. Turn the hat right side out.
- 4). Fold up the bottom open part of the hat using about 1/2 inch of fabric. Pin into place so that the raw edge sits on the outside of the hat. Sew into place using a 3/8-inch seam allowance.
- 5). Place the hat on the wearer's head and fold up the bottom 2 to 3 inches of fabric. The bottom raw edge should now be hidden from view. Adjust the length of the hat on the wearer's head.
