How to Convert Poise to Intrinsic Viscosity
- 1). Decide which liquid for which you need to convert the viscosity in poise. As an illustration, use water at room temperature, which has a viscosity of 0.01 poise or 0.01 dyne x s/cm^2.
- 2). Convert from newtons to dynes by dividing by 10^5, since one newton equals 10^5 dynes. Doing this with the example of water, you have (0.01 dyne x s/cm^2) x (1 N/10^5 dyne), leading to a result of 10^-7 N x s/cm^2.
- 3). Change from cm^2 to m^2 by multiplying by 10^4, because one square meter equals 10^4 square centimeters. This calculation gives (10^-7 N x s/cm^2) x (10^4 cm^2/1 m^2), which leads to a value of 0.001 N x s/m^2 for the viscosity.
