- Everybody carries Staphylococcus bacteria on the skin. When you are wounded, staph can enter the site. Staph infections are the most common cause of boils.
- You should treat boils as soon as they start to form, to avoid complications and serious infection.
- Treatments for boils include prescription medicines like Accutane and long-term therapy with antibiotics; herbs such as tea tree oil or arnica; and diet changes to cut out processed foods and excess sugar.
- Some home remedies people try include applying garlic, parsley, milk cream or turmeric to the boil. There is no clear evidence that these methods work, but probably won't do any harm.
- Ichthammol ointment is sulfuric shale in a carrier medium, like petroleum jelly, that can draw the infection from the boil and bring it to a "head" (soft state) faster.
- The best way to prevent future boils is to strengthen the immune system by eating a diet composed primarily of whole foods, restricting sugar intake, and taking vitamins and herbs that boost the immune system.
