How to Choose Egyptian Travel Destinations
- 1). Visiting the last of the seven wonders of the world, the Pyramids of Giza, is first on your list of Egyptian travel destinations. No one knows for sure how these magnificent architectural phenomenon were actually built. On the border of Cairo, there are three main pyramids at Giza, all tombs of Egyptian kings. They are by name, the Great Pyramid Khufu (Cheops), the Pyramid of Kafhre and the Pyramid of Menkaura. Protecting them at the front is the Sphinx, “Father of Terror,” carved from a single piece of stone.
- 2). Shooting up near Luxor are the vast number of Karnak Temples. This was the main place of worship and is, in fact, the largest ancient site of religion in the world. It is estimated the start of construction goes back to the 16th century BC. It is a huge outdoor complex, so if you can’t see it all, you must choose the Hypostile Hall. It is within the Great Temple of Amun. If your stay lasts into the evening hours you will be treated to a sound and light show.
- 3). Sailing down the Nile in a Felucca (an ancient sailboat) is like no other experience. The ships are built the same as they were thousands of years ago. Choose a short trip out of Cairo or Alexandria or opt for a longer cruise of 3 to 7 days, including meals and accommodations, that depart from Aswan.
- 4). Visit the pharaohs’ burial ground called the Valley of the Kings. Located on the ancient site of Thebes, the pharaohs hoped to find their gods in the afterlife from this location. Your visit will include an exploration inside of the tombs. However, all the treasures once buried there are now kept at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
- 5). After seeing the tourist sites, perhaps you will be ready for some relaxation in the old town of Siwa that dates back to the 13th century. This is a bit slower pace than you’ll find in Cairo. It’s off the beaten path, near the Libyan border in the Western Desert. It’s like an ancient resort with its mud brick buildings and a distinct culture and language of its own. Rest up, do some swimming, and eat some local olives before heading out on your next excursion.
- 6). Snorkeling or scuba diving may be your sport. If so, you won’t want to miss Hurghada on the Red Sea. You will find spectacular coral reefs with clear water and beautiful beaches here. Although diving is the main attraction in this city, with diving schools and centers, there is also an abundance of night clubs, restaurants and hotels. Hurghada’s waters are full of hundreds of exotic, colorful fish: among them are the lionfish, the Spanish dancer and blue spotted stingray. Further out, a diver can see whale sharks, dolphins and hammerhead sharks.
