International classical music festivals flourish worldwide, as do international festivals featuring primarily rock and pop music. In order to bring international musicians and artists to a festival, revenue is usually raised through ticket sales to a public audience. However, international music festivals may also have a strong music industry component or presence, so that musicians are showcasing their art to industry representatives. Other festivals focus on a particular musical genre, or world music from a particular culture or location.

    Classical Music

    • Many international music festivals focus primarily or exclusively on classical music. The Festival Internacional de Buenos Aires has taken place every two years since its foundation in 1997. This festival aims to showcase outstanding performances in contemporary performing arts. The festival is highly attended and often sells out. In Scotland's capital city, the Edinburgh International Festival takes place each August and features a festival of classical music, opera and dance. It also features comedy performances, theatre and other performing arts.

    Popular Music

    • International music festivals focussing on pop and rock music take place in many countries of the world on an annual basis. Often, festivals allow musicians to showcase themselves to panels of music industry representatives at the same time as performing for a live public audience. In The City, held annually in Manchester, England, is an example of one such public festival with a strong music industry presence. South By Southwest in Austin, Texas also features music-industry showcases within the context of a public festival. Other festivals are purely public, live-music ventures, such as England's annual Glastonbury festival, Big Day Out in Australia, and the Burning Man festival in the U.S.

    World Music

    • The organization World of Music, Arts & Dance (WOMAD) runs international festivals of world music. As of 2010, it hosts festivals in Italy, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. Other world music festivals showcase music in a certain style or from a certain geographical area, such as the annual Panorama steel band festival and competition that takes place annually in Trinidad and Tobago. The Detroit Electronic Music Festival features only electronic music created by a spectrum of international musicians.
