How Wedding Veils Were Used In Olden Times
Wedding veils had been used as bridal headpieces for a long time. Roman brides used to wear an extremely flame colored veil because it is said to protect the bride on her wedding day from evil spirits. The lifting of the veil is also part of the ancient ritual during weddings symbolizing a lot of things. One, this represents the groom's taking his wife into his possession may it be as a property, a lover or a partner in life. The lifting of the veil by the bride's parents also symbolizes the exposure of the bride daughter to the groom. Second, the unveiling during the wedding ceremony also marks the event that happens in the marriage bed. This is why the lifting of the veil takes place before the consummation of the marriage or the sexual union.
There is an ancient story in the Book of Genesis where Jacob married the wrong woman. He was tricked because the woman used a heavy, non-transparent veil. This story then resulted in the Jewish wedding practice wherein the groom lowers the wedding veil of his bride at the start of the ceremony. He then lifts the veil at the end of the wedding ceremony and before their first kiss as husband and wife.
These were how the veil was used. It is now up to you if the symbolism applies to your planned wedding for a meaningful wedding ceremony or not.
