There are so many people who believe that once their braces are removed and their teeth are straight then their orthodontic treatment has been finished. But this is not the actual scenario as after braces are removed teeth can move back to their crooked position if you will not continue with the proper care and this proper care incorporates the use of orthodontic retainer cases. These retainers keep the teeth straight, in that position where the braces moved them and retainers also provide patients much better results. So the new healthy and beautiful smile of the patients will be maintained if patients wear them as per the orthodontist's instructions.

Retainers can be of two types:

€ Removable Retainers
€ Fixed Retainers

Your orthodontist will determine whether you need fixed or removable ones that totally depend on your condition since each and every case is different. It is also important to notice that the success of the orthodontic treatments completely depend on your following of the orthodontist's instructions carefully.

€ The removable retainers are quite easier to clean when you take them out and they should also be cleaned at least every night.
€ The fixed retainers should be cleaned after each meal when you brush your teeth and you also need to make sure to brush thoroughly under the wire.
€ Patients who have removable retainers should be extra careful and whenever you are not wearing the retainer then you need to be in a case in order to avoid any sort of damage.

In most of the cases retainers are used, once the braces have been taken off to keep the teeth in the new position and these retainers can also be used for correcting many other orthodontic issues. Some of the times they are needed to be used to help a medical problem such as tongue thrust or any condition where your tongue comes through your teeth when you talk. In all these cases patient should wear a retainer that is known as a cage retainer that has different small metal bars that hang down from the roof of your mouth by effectively keeping your tongue from sneaking in between your teeth when you speak. These retainers can also efficiently help patients with the bruxism that is grinding of the teeth usually at nights while you sleep as the retainers quite competently prevent your mouth from closing completely and hence you will not be able to grind your teeth.
