Pregnancy And Hair Loss

Being pregnant is probably the most exciting time in a womans life. Carrying another life, with the prospect of what is yet to come, as well as being terrified at the future ordeal. This is enough stress on its own, let alone when hair loss then interferes. Hair loss during pregnancy can be normal, but there are some circumstances when it is worrying.
Telogen effluvium is a hair loss disorder whereby hair is excessively falling out, affecting women between one and five months after being pregnant a disorder suffered by 40-50% of women, and most often it is temporary.
The normal hair loss that occurs in relation to carrying a baby happens after the baby has been born. This is because during pregnancy, more hair goes into the dormant resting phase than normal (the resting stage is a perfectly normal phase of healthy hair growth / loss). Telogen effluvium during pregnancy isnt severe enough to result in bald spots or any long term hair loss, and those going through the hair loss disorder should notice that it begins to fade within three to four months of delivering the baby. However, longer term hair loss could be related to mineral or vitamin deficiency in the diet.
Hair is lost during and after pregnancy due to the imbalance of hormones shocking the bodys system. Hormones that sufficiently rise during pregnancy prevent you from any form of hair loss, whereas they go back to normal after delivery, causing the excess hair to fall out in order to regulate the hair growth cycle. This may all fall out at once.
This can also cause just over half of the hair that was in the growth stage to go in to the resting stage as hair follicles rejuvenate themselves, however this is also temporary, and the hair growth / loss cycle should automatically normalise itself within six to twelve months of delivery.
Anything that changes the oestrogen hormone levels in the bodily system can affect hair growth. The oestrogen hormone balance can eventually cause hair loss from a number of reasons, for example a discontinuation of birth control pills, as they are a type of hormone control methods which throws the bodily system out of sync, as well as miscarriage or stillbirth (which is also related to stress as a contributory factor), abortion and any other hormonal imbalance.
