Lawn Fungus & Too Much Watering
- Water is an important transmission method for lawn infections, including fungus. Too much watering causes the leaves of grass to be wet longer than is healthy or occurs naturally in the dew cycle. A dry lawn is more resistant to lawn fungus.
- Water your lawn early in the morning. This reduces water loss to evaporation during the heat of the day and allows your grass to dry before nightfall. Using an irrigation system or soaker hoses to water your lawn directs more water into the soil to feed your grass rather than keeping it on the surface, where it can feed lawn fungus.
- In addition to too much watering, allowing your grass to grow too long can increase your risk for developing lawn fungus. Careful watering, regular mowing and consistent removal of thatch buildup will protect your lawn. Reducing shade from shrubs or trees in problem areas also will help water dissipate at a regular rate.
